I liked that Jimmy was unlikable because you were still with him. You don’t see many films where the lead characters are really unlikable and really flawed but you still have to latch onto them.
I think of Jimmy as the purist kind of anti-hero. He’s certainly the protagonist, but he’s not meant to be likable. It’s a very modern trend where people confuse that the protagonist needs to be likable. Historically speaking, that’s not really how it works. Oedipus or Hamlet—it’s not like you want to fucking hang out with those guys. You want to watch them because it’s dramatic; you don’t have to like them, you just want to be engaged. You need conflict, you want to care, you want drama. You don’t want to see somebody you like—that’s so boring.Like A Clockwork Orange’s Alex DeLarge. That’s not someone you want to know.
Exactly or Travis Bickle. If Taxi Driver was made now, some asshole would say, “Oh he’s not likable. This movie sucks.” That’s one of the best movies ever made, and one of the reasons is that he’s not likable. You struggle with that character, and he challenges you and that makes you invest yourself more. It’s like, if I want to feel good, I’m going to look at a picture of a dog with a handkerchief around its neck. I don’t want to watch a fucking two-hour movie just to feel good. I can feel good on my own time.I loved this interview that Hillary did with Matt D’Elia, who wrote, directed, and starred in American Animal.
READ THIS, FOLKS! And then go to the cinema and see the film.
